St John's Wort got its name in the Netherlands because of its flowering time: this plant comes into flower on 24 June: on the Feast of St John. But its Latin name is: Hypericum Perforatum: in which Hypericum indicates that in antiquity it was given to overactive children and generally to busy, chaotic people. Perforatum indicates that this is how you heal the right plant: the leaf is perforated and when you look at the sky through this leaf, you see through a perforation as if it were a window (in other words: you see the light!). This remedy was given in antiquity to people who, on the gloomy days, had a lot of trouble staying cheerful themselves and so had to be helped to see the light.
