Alpinia officinarum Hance (galanga) is a perennial plant in the ginger family. Galanga has been traditionally used for many years to treat various illnesses, including colds, pain, inflammation, abdominal pain and microbial infections, and it also acts as an antioxidant and anti-cancer agent. Different parts of A. officinarum have been used directly or through different treatment methods. Plant parts such as rhizomes, leaves, aerial parts and roots of galanga were extracted in both polar and non-polar solvents to elicit the disease-fighting property. Flavonoid extract of this plant is more effective in a variety of diseases. This chapter summarises the application of A. officinarum in curing various diseases, from microbial infection to neural disease. Our main focus in this chapter is on the mechanism of galanga in hoping and promoting towards curing Alzheimer's disease.
